At this iconic spot on the Schelde and Spierekanaal, we want to place the ‘Spierebeker’, an Eyecatcher, a Work of Art, an attraction. The ‘Spierebeker’ tells a story about water and history. A story about mand and water, from the Stone Age and Roman times to today, and for tommorow.
The work aims to enhance the landscape experience. People are attracted by the unusual structure, a striking shape built in brick where you are invited to enter the artwork. Inside, one enters a room and looks through the roof onto the inside of the cup. Inside, the cup is lined with a story about rivers painted in mosaic. The opening in the roof acts as a compluvium and water is collected in a large bowl below, the impluvium. The place calls for resting, thinking, experiencing. Water is the connecting natural element here. The impluvium will also feature a mosaic with references to the history of the region.
The work can function as a refuge, meeting place and meeting point for many hikers and cyclists. The work has the ambition to become a real landmark for the region and make this special piece of land more widely known.

The work certainly also has the ambition to bring poetry, beauty
and to mentally stimulate the visitor. A place where you can be moved by the
natural elements and art.
